Medvedev, a former number one, has endured a difficult year, winning just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a setback at the American major. His varied form on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in particular - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and ultimately separating with former mentor Cervara. Currently collaborating with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet. It is the player's first championship following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt since March of the previous year. Success also indicates Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at 21 different tournaments. "It's the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters together, so to get a trophy is really nice," stated ranked player the champion. "This championship is in tribute of my child her name, because the maiden victory I got when my child Alisa was delivered was for her." Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in Halle earlier this year. His retrieving approach and regular reactions on court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to perform at the top level was concluded. Yet the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and compete assertively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game. He fought back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, securing four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage. The competitors exchanged service breaks in the second set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to force a decider. He defended four initial chances in a competitive final set before the champion broke to 15 to secure the win. Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the title with a shot at the front of the court, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
